Esquire Indonesia highlights the positive benefits of BDSM.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim majority country, is not exactly a sex-positive country, but, as vice put it, it is  particularly averse to the fun, whips and dildos and random partner kind, so it’s a tough place for people who are into S&M and alike.
Boni Gureng opposes the widely spread wall of prejudices among Indonesians with the positive benefits of BDSM in an article of the local edition of Esquire.

Better Communication

Couples who do BDSM tend to have better communication than those without. A transparent communication and interaction between the partners engaged in BDSM is a prerequisite for a safe, sane and consensual relation.

 Improve Intimacy

The fact that this activity involves physical risk can actually increase the level of intimacy of the couple. A 2009 study published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior indicates that the closeness in the relation of couples who have BDSM sex improved.

Loyalty

BDSM can help in increasing the levels of fidelity of each partner. Because of the energy, emotion, and trust that is essential for a BDSM relationship, partners are more unlikely cheating.

 Better Mental Health

Still BDSM is often associated with torture, rape, or mental illness, but studies have proven these ideas wrong. Studies in 2013 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that people who practice this sex are more open, more aware and more sensitive to rejection, more careful in relationships, and more prosperous overall.

Reduce Stress

According to a 2009 study psychological stress levels tend to decrease while doing BDSM activities.

Eliminate Anxiety

The satisfaction of hurting or being hurt was found to reduce anxiety in a person. A study in 2014 – which was broadcast at a meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Physiology in Austin, Texas –  found that during SM sex sessions changes in the blood flow in the brain can alter states of consciousness similar to ” runner’s high “or yoga.

A magazine like Esquire may have little impact on the moral majority of Indonesia, but it might help to bring the topic of sexual tolerance into the mainstream media. A little step to make this country even more beautiful.
